Samuel Arthur (Art) Martinez - Account

Dr. Art Martinez is a first generation Mexican American born to itinerant workers who had no formal education. He worked throughout his early childhood “following the crops” from Moorpark to San Jose, California, always leaving after school was out for the summer and returning in time for the new school year. His parents, who were his inspiration, always stressed the importance and wisdom of a strong spiritual foundation, a close caring family, love of country, a good education and a life of service. Art maintained three professional careers, business endeavors, and his schooling concurrently. He successfully scheduled and operated his architectural practice and his active military reserve status, while heavily involved in the academic world. He is now semi-retired, having left the academic and military arenas. He has been married to his wife, Shirlee, for over fifty years, has three children and four grandchildren.

Dr. Martinez received his doctorate in Higher and Post-Secondary Education from the University of Southern California, his Masters in Management from the University of LaVern, LaVern , California, and his Bachelor of Architecture Degree ( a 5-year degree) from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. He is a graduate of the Air War College, Maxwell Airforce Base, Alabama, The Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Los Angeles, both two year post-graduate courses, and the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a five year post-graduate studies at the Institute for Management of Lifelong Learning, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Art has nineteen years experience in higher education, with fifteen of those in senior level administration in multi-cultural, multi-campus academic settings. As one of the founding administrators of Coastline Community College District, Art served as Associate Dean of Instruction for eight years before returning to Orange Coast College as President in 1984. Orange Coast College is one of the largest community colleges in the United States, with, at the time, a student body of 25,000, faculty of 774 and support staff of 350. After retirement from Coast Community College District, Art moved to Chapman University as Associate Vice President, Administration and Continuing Education with centers across the United States and in the Far East. Later at the National Institute for Forensic Studies, Orange, California, Art served as Dean of the Educational Division and General Manager of the Environment and Engineering Division.

Throughout his careers, Art has served on many boards and committees (executive, advisory, civic and school) and on commissions and councils in Southern California and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Washington D.C. with the Department of Transportation, and in Mexico with the Department of Tourism, using his Spanish in a cultural exchange program. He has held various positions from President, Chairperson, Founder, Sponsor, Advisor and Member. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, both in civilian and military accomplishments, constantly stressing excellence in academic achievement, leadership and management, community service and human relations.

His most recent civic affiliation was as President of the Mac Arthur Village, Home-owners Association, South Coast Metro, a 614 unit residential complex, where he received the regional award for outstanding Board Member. Among his many military awards is the Legion of Merit, the highest award given by the Department of the Army in peace time.

As an Architect licensed in the state of California, Art has maintained his own practice since 1961, wherein he has been completely responsible for all aspects of its operation. For two years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he owned and operated a Manufacturing company winning a Product Design award at the Institute of Business Designers, New York City. For two years he served as Vice President, Seminars and Training with Robert B Sharp, a division of Russ Reid Co. and was privileged to be part of a unique team of specialists in fund raising and institutional advancement in the no-profit sector making a significant difference in peoples lives through philanthropy. He now provides architectural services and consulting, taking only select projects, does occasional lecturing, and markets health and wellness products. Art is a stock holder and active participant in The Intrepid Group, Inc., Co-owner of the Intrepid Equity Group, L.L.C. since early 1993.

Although he has “retired” several times, retirement has not yet become an active word in his vocabulary.
