Willis Group Holdings Limited is the fastest growing global broker, placing over $18 billion in annual premium volume last year.  They provide insurance brokerage and risk management consulting services for a broad range of clients in many industries.  Willis employs in excess of 13,000 people in over 300 offices, and they service clients in more than 180 countries. In North America alone Willis is well positioned to service their clients; having 65 Brokerage and Risk Management Service Offices, 11 Wholesale Offices and 10 Reinsurance Offices.  Willis is publicly traded (WSH, NYSE) and is headquartered in New York City and London.

Willis is the leader in surety bonding for the construction industry in America; writing more such surety bonds than any other firm in the country.  Additionally, from an aviation perspective, no other retail aviation insurance broker is larger than Willis on a worldwide basis.

Key differentiators of Willis are their domestic and international resource practices developed for the primary purpose of supporting the local retail offices in the delivery of state-of-the-art business solutions in insurance program design, marketing, and risk management consulting.  Willis will be providing the best possible insurance and benefit services to The Intrepid Equity Group’s selected clients on a nationwide basis, save those clients which originate out of Intrepid’s Charleston, SC office.

Our Relationship with Willis

Larry Spivey, Chief Executive Officer of The Intrepid Equity Group, enjoys a very special relationship with Willis (and its predecessor company, Willis Corroon) at all levels in general, and with the North Carolina office in particular, that goes back many years.  Willis people, over the years, from the Chairman down, have supported Intrepid’s endeavors on its own behalf as well as those of its sister companies and clients, traveling on occasion, throughout the US and abroad.  Willis was also instrumental, in the early days, in helping Mr. Spivey to obtain his US Patent for his unique ESOP mechanism.  Neither Intrepid nor Mr. Spivey (or any related entity) receive any form of remuneration from Willis for insurance or services provided to Intrepid clients. The Intrepid Equity Group’s extraordinary and close relationship with Willis enables our clients to have access to expertly manuscripted policies at the best possible rates because of Willis’ market clout and reputation throughout the underwriting community, unflagging dedication to quality service, and unrivaled client advocate business model.  Willis provides the very best service imaginable to Intrepid’s clients, efficiently coordinated through our friends Luke Laborde and Mike Verian in Willis’ North Carolina offices. This arrangement enables Intrepid to make sure, to the greatest extent possible, that its clients and resulting ESOP owners enjoy the maximum protection available at the most competitive rates to be found in the industry from what, in our enlightened view, based on our own experience with Willis, is the best brokerage firm in the nation, if not the world.

Luke Laborde is a 26 year veteran of Willis Group and predecessor companies, and currently serves as President of Willis of North Carolina, Inc., a position he has held since August of 2000. He has held a variety of management positions in Willis North America, including responsibility for Research and Development, Risk Management Services, Strategic Planning, and Strategic Insurer Relations.  His responsibilities have included risk management program design and feasibility consulting for large corporate accounts, affinity groups, and associations.  He has worked extensively with construction, healthcare, technology, USL&H, manufacturing, transportation and agribusiness risks.

Luke has been active in the risk management community as a speaker and author of articles on various topics of risk management for many years.  He is an associate member of Piedmont RIMS, and served on the national continuing education faculty of both RIMS and the American Management Association.

He is a former Director of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers, and is past Chairman of the National Association of Insurance Brokers, a position he held from 1994-1995.   He currently serves as a director of the Triangle Chapter of the Construction Financial Managers Association, and is an associate member of Carolinas AGC, ABC of the Carolinas and NC Go.  He serves on the Board of the Leadership Raleigh program, sponsored by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Economic Development Committee of the Morrisville Chamber of Commerce.

Luke graduated Magna Cum Laude from Louisiana State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and in 1978 he received his Master of Business Administration degree, also from L.S.U.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of Ducks Unlimited, Inc., conserving wetlands for wildlife, and is an active parishioner at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cary, NC.   He lives in Cary with his wife Sonja and their four children.

Mike Verian (V.P., Willis, Raleigh, NC) serves as a producer for Willis. In his role as a client advocate he is responsible for sales and support; technical training and resource development; insurance market relations; and strategic business development.

Mike has over 18 years of Risk Management consulting, underwriting and brokerage experience. He began his career in Loss Control with Crum and Foster then later with the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies. As a senior level consultant and territory manager he performed numerous program reviews for companies with a variety of business dealings to assist them with exposure identification and the implementation of controls.

In 2003 Mike moved from an insurance company risk management position to a brokerage role. He now utilizes his extensive knowledge of exposure identification specific to insurance products and business issues, and his relationships with the various providers, to assist clients in developing effective risk management solutions.

Mike received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Saint Francis College in Loretto, PA. He also holds the Associate Safety Professional designation from the Insurance Institute of America.

He is actively involved in the community, serving on the parish council and as an officer in the Knights of Columbus at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Fuquay-Varina, NC. He is a coach for his son and daughter’s baseball, basketball, and soccer teams. Mike and his wife Cindy live in Holly Springs, NC.
